Barben, Daniel; Matzner, Nils (2020): Anticipatory Governance of Climate Engineering

Barben, Daniel; Matzner, Nils (2020): Anticipatory Governance of Climate Engineering. In Oxford Research Encyclopedias: Geoengineering. DOI: 10.1093/acrefore/9780190228620.013.69.

"This article will discuss notions of anticipatory governance as developed in various institutional contexts concerned with assessing, funding, regulating, or conducting research and innovation. It will explore how notions of anticipatory governance have been transferred to the field of CE, in attempts at either shaping the course of CE-related research and innovation or at critically observing various CE-related governance endeavors by evaluating their capacities in anticipatorily governing research and technology development."

Geden, Oliver; Schenuit, Felix (2020): Unconventional mitigation. Carbon Dioxide Removal as a New Approach in EU Climate Policy

Geden, Oliver; Schenuit, Felix (2020): Unconventional mitigation. Carbon Dioxide Removal as a New Approach in EU Climate Policy. SWP Research Paper 2020/RP 08, June 2020. Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik. doi:10.18449/2020RP08.

"If the EU wants to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, enacting conventional climate change mitigation measures to avoid emissions of greenhouse gases will not be enough. To compensate for unavoidable residual emissions, unconventional measures to remove CO2 from the atmosphere will also be necessary – for example, through afforestation or the direct capture of CO2 from ambient air."

Donnison, Caspar; et al. (2020): Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS): Finding the win–wins for energy, negative emissions and ecosystem services—size matters

Donnison, Caspar; Holland, Robert A.; Hastings, Astley; Armstrong, Lindsay‐Marie; Eigenbrod, Felix; Taylor, Gail (2020): Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS): Finding the win–wins for energy, negative emissions and ecosystem services—size matters. In GCB Bioenergy. DOI: 10.1111/gcbb.12695.

"Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) features heavily in the energy scenarios designed to meet the Paris Agreement targets, but the models used to generate these scenarios do not address environmental and social implications of BECCS at the regional scale. We integrate ecosystem service values into a land‐use optimization tool to determine the favourability of six potential UK locations for a 500 MW BECCS power plant operating on local biomass resources."
