Job: Postdoctoral Scholar - Atmospheric Sciences (University of Washington)

No Deadline

"Develop and carry out climate model experiments in which aerosols are introduced into various cloud regimes of the marine boundary layer environment to explore impacts on the planet’s circulation features (near and far field impacts on clouds, winds, precipitation, ocean circulation and mixing, etc)."

C2G Guest Post: 5 lessons from COVID-19 for solar geoengineering

"If the idea of suppressing temperature rise by injecting an aerosol into the sky leaves the realm of modelling and experiments, it will be thrust into a science-media-politics environment that operates in ways that are not currently anticipated—at least not in idealized modelling studies."

Bangor Daily News: Geoengineering could be our last chance to stop an Arctic thaw

"Very reluctantly, Hunt would now be willing to consider putting an aerosol (probably sulfur dioxide) into the stratosphere over the Arctic Ocean to reflect enough incoming sunlight to hold the local temperature down."

Wolf, Martin J.; et al. (2020): A biogenic secondary organic aerosol source of cirrus ice nucleating particles

Wolf, Martin J.; Zhang, Yue; Zawadowicz, Maria A.; Goodell, Megan; Froyd, Karl; Freney, Evelyn et al. (2020): A biogenic secondary organic aerosol source of cirrus ice nucleating particles. In Nat Comms 11 (1), p. 4834. DOI: 10.1038/s41467-020-18424-6.

"Atmospheric ice nucleating particles (INPs) influence global climate by altering cloud formation, lifetime, and precipitation efficiency. The role of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) material as a source of INPs in the ambient atmosphere has not been well defined. Here, we demonstrate the potential for biogenic SOA to activate as depositional INPs in the upper troposphere by combining field measurements with laboratory experiments."

Yang, Huiyi; et al. (2020): South India projected to be susceptible to high future groundnut failure rates for future climate change and geo-engineered scenarios

Yang, Huiyi; Dobbie, Steven; Ramirez-Villegas, Julian; Chen, Bing; Qiu, Shaojun; Ghosh, Sat; Challinor, Andy (2020): South India projected to be susceptible to high future groundnut failure rates for future climate change and geo-engineered scenarios. In The Science of the Total Environment 747, p. 141240. DOI: 10.1016/j.scitotenv.2020.141240.

"With an increase in global mean temperature predicted for this century accompanied by more frequent extremes, will farming communities need to brace for increased crop failures and hardship? Solar dimming climate geoengineering has been proposed as a possible solution to combat rising global temperature but what effect will it or other climate related adaptation have on crop failures? We performed a crop modelling study using future climate and geoengineering projections to investigate these questions."
