Job: Climate Philanthropy Senior Research Fellow, Drawdown Labs

No Deadline

"Project Drawdown has identified a widespread need among climate-conscious investors, funders, and philanthropies seeking guidance on how best to scale high-impact climate solutions. Philanthropic investors in particular are uniquely positioned to fund climate solutions that may have difficulty accessing traditional capital due to political constraints, profit mandates, and other hurdles to securing funds from conventional sources—and this presents an opportunity to fill a critical financing gap in the climate space. But due to an incredibly large quantity and variety of climate projects, as well as the level of expert knowledge needed to decipher the impact of these projects, many foundations struggle with understanding these options, and thus have difficulty developing effective long-term climate funding strategies. Building on Project Drawdown’s comprehensive assessment of global climate solutions, the Climate Philanthropy Senior Fellow will help draw connections between key climate solutions and the most effective philanthropic strategies to scale them. This research will identify the key sectors, geographies, solutions, and accelerators with high potential for climate action but with little access to conventional financing. Additionally, this position will research the barriers to scaling climate solutions through conventional funding and philanthropic funding; driving factors of current philanthropic funding strategies; opportunities for attracting philanthropies historically absent from the climate solutions space; and how grantmakers can be connected to those implementing climate solutions to direct funds where they are most needed."

Job: Postdoc (m/f/d) in assessment of climate forcing impact of Carbon Dioxide Removal measures using IAM data and Earth system modelling (Geomar)

Deadline: 17. October 2021

"What happens to the Earth system once we reach our emissions goals? Will that stabilise our climate? Even if we achieve it with large scale carbon dioxide removal measures?! The research project 'FOOTPRINTS - From carbOn remOval To achieving the PaRls agreemeNt's goal: Temperature Stabilisation' will contribute fundamental knowledge that will bring us closer to understanding how the Earth system will respond once we reduce (but not entirely eliminate) our human impact. The advertised postdoc position will utilise integrated assessment modelling data and newest literature findings of emerging Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) measures to conduct life cycle assessments of the complete forcing footprints of currently proposed CDR measures. The assessment includes greenhouse gas and aerosol emissions and other climate forcing impacts of carbon dioxide removal measures. Using this forcing data, the climate forcing footprints of the CDR measures are estimated using an Earth system model of intermediate complexity. Assessing the overall climate impact of CDR measures over time allows us to understand their overall efficacy and their ability to compensate other anthropogenic activities. The candidate will be working closely with integrated assessment modellers as well as Earth system modellers in the project, CDR experts at GEOMAR, as well as collaborators at the Institute for World Economics (Kiel, Germany) and the International Institute for Applied System Analysis (Austria)."

Call for Submissions: Shopify's Sustainability Fund

Deadline: 12. October 2021

"Our Sustainability Fund was created to help reverse climate change. This means reducing and addressing emissions now, and also supporting emerging technologies that the world needs to mitigate the worst effects of climate change. [...] We will consider any project or solution that stores CO₂ outside of the atmosphere. This includes high-volume, short-term storage solutions that buy us precious time now while long-term, durable carbon removal technologies develop and scale. We are open to projects that are an idea on paper, all the way up to fully commercialized solutions."

Job: Software Engineer (Charm)

No Deadline

"Our mission is to reverse climate change and return the atmosphere to 280 ppm CO2. To pursue this challenge, we convert waste biomass into carbon-rich bio-oil and inject into permanent, underground storage wells as a form of carbon removal, or reform it to produce green hydrogen and syngas for industrial processes like steel, cement, and chemicals manufacturing. [...] As a software engineer at Charm Industrial you’ll be responsible for designing and implementing internal tools, control, data analysis, and automation for our little earth-saving robots. Each element of the system requires its own little bit of software - ladder logic on the PLCs, Python on the GUIs, C on low-level hardware, database work on the data side, and small linux scripts on the servers. In the intersection of all of these systems there’s always something interesting to work on."

Your responsibilities as a design engineer will be to own one to many subsystems on our systems from end-to-end, with a focus on robust, creative and thoughtful design decisions. You will collaborate with the rest of the team on critical interfaces and high-level systems design. You will put your hardware through test situations early and often, to ensure consistency and stability in the field. Best and most importantly, your hardware will be critical in ensuring a better future for our planet."
