Matzner, Nils; Barben, Daniel (2020): Climate Engineering as a Communication Challenge: Contested Notions of Responsibility Across Expert Arenas of Science and Policy

Matzner, Nils; Barben, Daniel (2020): Climate Engineering as a Communication Challenge: Contested Notions of Responsibility Across Expert Arenas of Science and Policy. SAGE Publications. Los Angeles, CA. Available online at https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/1075547019899408, updated on 1/29/2020.

"This article starts out from a notion of responsibility regarding subjects, objects, norms, and authorities. It will identify and analyze discursive patterns of responsibility across six expert arenas and provide a comparative mapping of these patterns. Better understanding controversy may help in finding common ground for designing research and policy strategies around CE. Taking on the challenges of communicating CE-related responsibilities would support CE governance."

Macias-Fauria, Marc; et al. (2020): Pleistocene Arctic megafaunal ecological engineering as a natural climate solution?

Macias-Fauria, Marc; Jepson, Paul; Zimov, Nikita; Malhi, Yadvinder (2020): Pleistocene Arctic megafaunal ecological engineering as a natural climate solution? In Philosophical transactions of the Royal Society of London. Series B, Biological sciences 375 (1794), p. 20190122. DOI: 10.1098/rstb.2019.0122.

"Here we review the environmental context of megafaunal ecological engineering in the Arctic; explore the mechanisms through which it can help mitigate climate change; and estimate its potential—based on bison and horse, with the aim of evaluating the feasibility of generating an ecosystem shift that is economically viable in terms of carbon benefits and of sufficient scale to play a significant role in global climate change mitigation."

RiverTowns: Scientists study new techniques to fight climate change

"Finding new solutions to problems caused by climate change is what David Keith, professor of applied physics at Harvard School of Engineering, works on every day. Keith, one of the featured speakers at the Nobel Conference at Gustavus Adolphus College on Sept. 25, 2019, noted that three earlier problems involving smog, DDT pesticides, and stratospheric ozone, were problems that inspired quick action and effective results."

Sierra Club: Could Geoengineering Help Save the World’s Ice?

"Slowing the rate of ice melt there and elsewhere would allow for critical adaptation in at-risk areas, such as islands and coastal cities. Some researchers are looking to geoengineering to accomplish this. Michael Wolovick, a researcher at Beijing Normal University, is one of them. He and his colleague John Moore have studied a number of geoengineering strategies to prevent or slow the collapse of Thwaites Glacier."
