Independent: Scientists create ‘artificial leaf’ that sucks in carbon dioxide and makes fuel

"The new technology was inspired by the way plants use photosynthesis to turn carbon dioxide into glucose and oxygen. The artificial leaf mimics this process – with the help of a cheap red powder called cuprous oxide – and produces methanol and oxygen."

‌"We propose a novel distributed governance model of consensually-constrained unilateralism: Countries’ authority is limited to each state’s fraction of the maximum realistic intervention (e.g., pre-industrial temperature). We suggest a division of authority based on historical emissions (Rocha et al., 2015)—noting alternatives (e.g., population). To aid understanding, we offer an analogue: An over-heated train carriage, with passenger-controlled windows. We subsequently discuss the likely complexities, notably Coasian side-payments. Finally, we suggest further research: Algebraic, bot and human modeling; and observational studies."

We believe this is the first application of DRL to the climate sciences."

Call for Proposals: Greenhouse Gas Removal Demonstrators Directorate Hub

Deadline: 19 November 2019

"NERC, on behalf of UKRI are inviting proposals of up to £6.1m (at 80% fEC) for the Directorate Hub of the Strategic Priorities Fund (SPF) Wave 2 Greenhouse Gas Removal Demonstrators programme. The Directorate Hub should have a start date of no later than 1 February 2021 and will have the duration of 4.5 years (54 months) to cover the full duration of the programme."
